An important bill was introduced by the Government of India in the Parliament today, which has also been fully supported by the opposition parties. The Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill, 2021 was introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar. This bill, which empowers the state governments to prepare the OBC list, was passed unanimously in the House.

The bill was approved in the recent Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With this bill, the state governments will have the power to notify the castes in the OBC category according to their needs. Many regional parties as well as leaders of the ruling party have demanded this amendment earlier.

After the Lok Sabha ratified the amendments to Articles 342-A and 366(26)C of the Constitution, communities from different states of the country, such as the Patel community in Gujarat, the Maratha community in Maharashtra, the Lingayat community in Karnataka and the Jat community in Haryana The way to be included in the OBC category can be cleared. All these communities have been raising the demand for reservation for a long time.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court has also intervened in this matter earlier. In May this year, the Supreme Court, while hearing a petition, said that only the central government has the right to prepare a list related to the OBC community. However, objections were also raised by the central and state governments on this. After this the Government of India has decided to bring the Constitution Amendment Bill.
