Microblogging site Twitter has been summoned by the Parliament’s Standing Committee of Information and Technology. According to a report by a leading news agency, Twitter officials have been asked to appear in Parliament premises to seek answers on rights and security issues related to social media.

The Parliamentary Committee has asked Twitter officials to appear in Parliament on 18 June 2021. Along with this, the committee has also called the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to present its stand. The issue pertains to the misuse of social and online news media platforms as well as the safety of women on digital platforms.

According to a leading daily report, a parliamentary committee panel will discuss how to prevent misuse of social media and online news on June 18. Apart from this, Twitter officials can also be questioned about the new IT rules. The committee will first hear Twitter’s side and then IT ministry officials will also be given an opportunity to present evidence on the misuse of the social platform and the special focus on women’s safety in the digital space.

There is a dispute between the Government of India and Twitter regarding the new IT rules. Recently, while issuing a notice to Twitter, the Government of India had given the last warning that the company should follow the new guidelines as soon as possible, otherwise, strict legal action will be taken against it. After which it was said by Twitter that it is doing everything possible to follow the new guidelines.
